ABOUT
Peita-Claire Fothergill
My name is Peita-Claire Fothergill (nee Hepperlin). I am a former soccer player and member of The Matildas—Australian Women's Football Team, and competed at the 1999 Women's World Cup and the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
I have a Master of Counselling degree and am a registered member of the Australian Counselling Association (ACA).
Philosophy
My counselling philosophy is rooted in the belief that each individual possesses the inherent ability to grow, change, and overcome challenges. I adopt a client-centred approach, emphasising empathy, unconditional positive regard, and genuineness in my interactions. This framework creates a supportive, non-judgmental space where clients feel heard, valued, and empowered.
I integrate techniques from various therapeutic modalities, including cognitive-behavioural therapy, mindfulness, and solution-focused therapy. However, what sets my approach apart is the way I tailor these interventions to meet the unique needs of each client. My goal is to help individuals develop self-awareness, enhance their coping strategies, and foster resilience, enabling them to navigate life's complexities with greater confidence and autonomy.
I believe in the therapeutic relationship's collaborative nature, viewing it as a partnership where the counsellor and client actively engage in the healing process. Working together, we explore thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, seeking insights that lead to meaningful and lasting change. Ultimately, my philosophy centres on facilitating personal growth and helping individuals live more fulfilling lives.
Previously, I have been a teacher for many years, with a wealth of experience and insights from my time in education. I am passionate about supporting teacher well-being within the education system. I have insight into the unique challenges and stressors and seek to provide resources, strategies, and initiatives to help maintain their emotional well-being. Furthermore, I help athletes evolve out of their sporting careers. I understand how this transition, with the loss of identity and purpose, can be difficult for athletes. I have the lived experience and qualifications to be helpful in these areas.
